Web Watch Wednesday: Librarything.com

I’M IN LOVE!!!  And it’s all because of Tim Challies.  I mean, it’s because of this post I read on challies.com that introduced me to my new love, Librarything!  How do I know it’s real love?  Well, when you first meet, you drop your jaw, and think, “Where have you been all my life?”  and then you start spending more and more time together, at work, at your house, and you keep thinking about how you can spend more time together, and you think of all the wonderful things you can do together, and you keep finding out more and more that makes your heart grow fonder and fonder, and you realize that you were meant for each other, and…. ok, I’m not sure if I’m in love with Librarything or am just mentally disturbed (although the cynics say there’s not much difference between the two states).

What am I talking about? Librarything.com is a website that starts with a simple concept: catalog and manage your books.  Not anything new.  But it does it great:  books are easy to add to the library (you can even use a bar code scanner), it’s online so you can catalog books in multiple locations easily, and you can easily manipulate the data to show average age of books, lists in custom formats, extensive information pulled from internet sources about each book, ability to categorize books with tagging, even photos of authors in your library.

Is that all? NO, then librarything goes into orbit by integrating your library with millions of other books cataloged by people all over the globe.  You can compare your library to others, see what books other people have, even find out what books you shouldn’t have based on your tastes.

Wait!  There’s more!  Social networking through perusing other people’s libraries, belonging to online discussion groups, sharing reviews and ratings of books, and the list of features just goes on and on…

And best of all, it’s absolutely FREE!!!  Gotta love that. Ready to find out more?  Then check out my profile page on librarything to see my books, my stats, and even the fact that I share a few books with such eminent bloggers as Steve McCoy, fellow Tennessee blogger Steve Weaver, the man behind the blogfest at T4G Timmy Brister, and the ever present Mr. Challies (who would have thought Tim owned four books by Eldredge???)
